This week, we're highlighting some exciting lots from Ewbank's recent Vintage Poster auction. Whilst some lots more than doubled their estimates, others stood out for their unique designs and cultural significance in the world of film.
First up on this week's featured lots is a rare 1953 War Of The Worlds British Quad film poster. Produced by Paramount Pictures and based on H. G. Wells' iconic novel, the full-colour poster features the fantastic Martian space ships. With an estimate of £8,000 - £12,000, this classic poster reached a sensational hammer price of £17,000.
Moving from the fab fifties to the swinging sixties, we showcase this framed US film poster for the 1969 comedy caper classic The Italian Job. Marking Noël Coward's final film and one of Michael Caine's most celebrated roles, The Italian Job has a rich cultural history, and this iconic poster design adds to it. With a minimum estimate of £300, its hammer price hit a fantastic £1,300.
Next up, we have this iconic British Quad Film Poster for the 1971 martial arts movie The Big Boss. Starring the legendary Bruce Lee in his first major movie as a leading star, the film has had a complicated history with censorship, missing scenes, and unofficial sequels. It more than tripled its £80 estimate with a £650 hammer price.
Alfred Hitchcock's Psycho is one of the most recognisable films in cinema history. Classed as the first slasher film of its kind, it's influenced countless directors and writers over the years. This No. 3 US lobby card shows a scene from the film, intending to lure the public into theatres.
This week's final featured lot is one for the real movie fans! Not one, not two, not three, but 1000 British Quad film posters in a single lot! Including titles from a variety of genres and eras, such as The 40-Year-Old Virgin, Toy Story 2, Ghost, Miami Vice and Good Will Hunting, the lot had a final hammer price of £1,000, quadrupling its minimum estimate of £200.
